The President of Chile and Tompkins Conservation have signed a historic pledge to create 10 million acres of new national parks! Help us ensure these parks are protected into perpetuity.
On March 15, 2017, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, leader of Tompkins Conservation, signed a pledge indicating their shared commitment to significantly expand national parkland in Chile by approximately 10 million acres (three times the size of Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks combined). The proposal represents the largest land donation in history from a private entity to a state. When completed it will result in the creation of five new national parks including Pumalin and Patagonia Park, which contain one million acres, and the expansion of three others.
Now, we need your help to ensure the legal and transaction costs are covered to enact this historic national park creation. Over the coming months, the Tompkins Conservation team will be working closely with government ministers to finalize the details of this momentous step towards global wilderness protection. By acting now, you can help ensure that these precious lands become fully functioning national parks, protected into perpetuity. Your support for wilderness conservation in Patagonia will give species like the endangered huemul deer, a national symbol in Chile, secure habitat for generations to come.
Tompkins Conservation believes in the enduring value of wildness: their conservation work aims to conserve big, wild landscapes with their full complement of native species, including keystone species such as pumas and jaguars. They believe that national parks are the oldest, most durable, and best-loved tool for conserving natural habitat and helping create a broader culture of conservation in society, By helping create and expand parklands, and working to restore missing species and processes to degraded landscapes, they are working toward a world where humans and wild nature flourish together. All donations to this campaign will be directed to a U.S. charitable entity operating under the Tompkins Conservation umbrella.
